Parsing Out Book Genre Preferences by Age
Based on my stats, one would think that my Meta ad was a complete failure. One would be correct. However, my ads manager report does show a breakdown by age demographic, which can be valuable information for marketing purposes. (Not for my marketing purposes; I just mean in general.)
As it sits now, my ad has been presented to a majority of female readers over the age of 35. At first it was only shown to the elderly, which is fine, but the longer it's run, the more expansive the algorithm has become. I won't run the ad long enough to get a complete picture, but I'm beginning to get a snapshot.
Obviously, my genre does not appeal to anyone age 18 - 34, which surprises me in a way. It's clear by the book description and ad copy that my protagonist is in her mid-thirties.
So I went searching for genre preferences by age; female only. (If you're writing for males, sorry; you'll need to do your own research.)
Female Reading Preferences by Age Group
- Romance & "Romantasy": Romance is the absolute #1 most-read genre for women in this age bracket. Subgenres combining high fantasy with heavy romance plots (like Sarah J. Maas's series) are the primary drivers of growth in physical book sales for this group.
- Dystopian & Sci-Fi Fantasy: This generation maintains a strong attachment to speculative fiction and dark fantasy subgenres, which they carried over from the YA boom of their childhoods.
- Contemporary "Sad Girl" Literature: Character-driven, emotional, or existential fiction focused on the modern female experience is highly popular here.
- Psychological Thrillers & Mystery: Thrillers take over as the preferred choice in this bracket. Driven by complex female leads, domestic suspense and psychological thrillers see massive engagement.
- Young Adult (YA) Fiction: Interestingly, industry sales data reveals that women in their 30s make up the largest actual consumer base for Young Adult novels, keeping up with the fast-paced, high-emotion style of storytelling.
- Memoirs & Autobiographies: In non-fiction, this group dominates the consumption of celebrity, political, and deeply personal memoirs written by women.
- Contemporary Romance: While "Romantasy" skews slightly younger, adult contemporary romance (e.g., Colleen Hoover) remains incredibly strong here.
- Mystery & Crime Procedurals: This is the absolute anchor demographic for traditional crime fiction, cozy mysteries, and detective procedurals. Women over 50 consistently rank mystery as their favorite genre.
- Historical Fiction: Immersive, multi-generational historical sagas—especially those set around WWII or the mid-20th century—are exceptionally popular with older female readers.
- Women’s Fiction: Grounded, life-stage-focused dramas dealing with family dynamics, aging, sisterhood, or late-in-life romance hold a very strong market share here.
- Religion & Spirituality / Self-Help: Non-fiction interest in this bracket leans heavily toward spiritual growth, wellness, and historical biographies.
