My Legacy Book is Finished!
Whew! This has been a long, frustrating process! I received the gift of a memorygram legacy book for Christmas, 2025. Foolishly, I thought the project would be fun.
It took me nine months to finish...or rather to proclaim it finished. I just couldn't go on any longer. I created 34 "stories", which means I answered 34 questions, and some of those questions were ones I created. Because, no offense, memorygram, but a lot of your questions reek. Repetitive questions about my songwriting career--Who influenced it? How did being raised in Minnesota drive my songwriting? Where do my song ideas come from? Please stop! I answered one question about it and rejected the rest. This pattern continued for a bunch of topics.
But enough about that. I declared the book finished, ordered a copy for myself (I'm the only one who'll read it), and washed my hands of the whole thing.
Know what it's been like having this monkey on my back? I often wanted to dive into other projects, but no; this had to be finished first or else I'd hate myself.
I wonder how many of these books are gifted to family members and are never completed. I bet, a lot. Had it not been for my fiction career--forcing myself to write, even when I dreaded it, I would never have had the discipline to finish this.
Then there's the rare chance that someone might read it. That's an embarrassing notion.
What I have learned these past nine months is that I never want to talk about myself again. I'm not very interesting. Most people never get the opportunity to discover that about themselves.
In that regard, I guess I'm lucky.
