A Good Person to Follow for Book Marketing Advice
Back when I thought I would get involved with Substack, I began following multiple accounts, ones that seemed at least slightly interesting. Since that time, I've whittled down my subscriptions to a handful, but Self-Publishing With Dale is one that provides value to authors, especially in the realm of book marketing and especially for those who are new to the game.
What I appreciate about his posts is that he combines optimism with reality. He doesn't claim that by doing X, an author is going to become a best seller. He simply presents practical advice and, generously, tools. Yesterday, for example, he offered a free download of a directory he compiled of 111 book promotion sites. What I appreciated was his accompanying message:
"...I want to make one thing clear. I’m not endorsing every site on this list, and prices, offers, and availability can change over time. You still need to do your homework before spending any money."
Roberts clearly understands that many of us are not working with a gigantic marketing budget and that a lot of his followers are beginners. Unlike most so-called "experts", he doesn't talk down to us.
If video is more to your liking, Roberts also has a YouTube channel.
Even if you're an experienced self-publisher, you'll run across tips you never considered. I know I did.
Here, by the way, is his website.
As I mentioned, The Failed Author's mission statement is to share both the good and the bad; sites that are worth your time and companies for which the $$ only flow in one direction (theirs).
This one is definitely worth your time. (And no $$ involved, unless you decide to become a paid Substack subscriber.)
