Seeking Cover Input
In lieu of actually editing my manuscript, I chose to play around with cover ideas. Because what's the point of doing something productive, when goofing off is more entertaining?
Originally, I'd found a royalty-free image on Pixabay that I loved, but unfortunately when I slapped the resulting cover onto an epub and pulled it up on my Kindle Reader app, I discovered that it looked ghastly. I mean, really, really bad---amateurish. The photo claimed all the cover space because its size couldn't be reduced (believe me, I tried). But enough about bad choices.
So, back I went to Pixabay. I tend to be too stubborn to easily discard an idea, even when it clearly won't work out, but I finally surrendered and plugged in a few different search terms, such as "broken", "shattered", "cracked". At the heart of the novel is a story about a dysfunctional family, so that's the theme I want to convey with my cover. (The ornate picture frame, sans family photo, instead revealing the cracked wall behind it would have been perfect. Alas, it just didn't work.)
