Really, Blog Person, This is What You're Upset About?
What? Is the writer of that blog post super popular or what? I've never heard of the blog or her/them. (The "About" page indicates that two, possibly three people author it.) Weirdly Coincidentally, the authors tend to write about subjects I touch on here. True, their blog's been around since 2009, I've learned, whereas mine is comparatively recent; perhaps two years old. (I don't feel like scrolling all the way back to find my first post.) I've never once gotten a single comment. Not even spam!
I know I'm being read. My analytics prove that, so all I can assume is that people are looking for content to make them sleepy enough to drift off for the night. Even my music blog that's been in existence for almost twenty years has only gotten a total of 109 comments. (Those stopped once Google f'd up and deleted my blog and I had to start over.)
I realize that blogs aren't popular anymore. I've known that for a while. Blogger once had a feature that prompted readers to click onto the next blog at random. I used it a few times to see what else people were blogging about, but that feature no longer exists. I don't think people like long form writing anymore. (Thanks, social media.)
Please don't read this post as a plea for comments. If you're getting some value out of this site, that works for me! It'll take far more than silence for me to abandon it. In fact, I only started my site in order to have a place to vent/brainstorm/hone my writing skills. It wasn't until I concluded that some of the products and services I'd used might be of interest to others that I changed its focus. This post is more of a comment on the article than anything. My "lived experience" is not remotely similar to the writer's. And I question whether someone will give up on their blog solely due to spam comments. I do have moderation set for comments, not that I've had to use it in...oh, sixteen years, but if I ever get one...My point is, it's not a heavy lift to read an email and determine if a comment is spam. Maybe it is if you get a hundred spam comments a day. I'll grant that. I'm pretty sure most bloggers don't, though.
As for me, I'll keep on keeping on. I choose to think at least one of my posts has helped someone out there.
