A New Promo Site ~ I Have Questions
Apparently it's fine...great...for companies to cold call and goad authors into spending money, but dare ask a question and the silent treatment commences. A promo site I'd never heard of (and I've heard of pretty much all of them) contacted me through my website to urge me to run a promo with them. Naturally, I view all solicitations as scams, because what reputable company needs to fish for customers? Nevertheless, BookPinks is, by all appearances, legit; and Google offers no negative (or positive) feedback on it. Once I was assured it wasn't a malicious site, I pulled it up, and the first thing that really stood out to me was that the majority of books on its home page are not discounted...at all. In fact, they're mostly quite expensive (for ebooks). Yes, there is a short section of free books, maybe ten in all, but this is...odd. Every promo sites wants discounted books; many will only take heavily discounted or free ones.
Here's the other thing about the site: Weird English. I'm tempted to say that its sections were written by AI, except AI is better than this.
"Welcome to our book promotion site, where readers like you are at the core of our scholarly excursion!" Huh? "Our central goal is to promote the delight of readers, with enamoring stories, and praise the brilliance of authors worldwide."
It's like someone who's studied English, but doesn't quite have a grasp of it. (I don't think "enamoring" is an adjective, for one.)
Okay, frankly, I would never buy a $40.00 promo from this site; however, being curious, I responded to their message and asked what their reader base is. No answer. How difficult is a one-word response? Well, we know, don't we? I'm not singling this place out; many promo sites aren't eager to share that info.
Just one more thing: What's with the name, BookPinks? I could see "pink" as a representative of romance novels, but the site has every genre imaginable. (Shoot, I should have asked them that, too. 😜 )
All in all, I would have to say that it's a poorly thought out concept. But hey, thanks for getting in touch!
