I Would Like a Better Website
My author website is pretty cheesy. I realize it doesn't matter much, except to me, because I don't get any visitors. But if someone actually took the time to surf over to it, they'd probably judge me as a complete amateur due to my pitiful website design.
It's not that I would balk at paying a pittance for a website hosting service, but I had so much trouble redirecting my domain name to a different host that I ended up buying a new domain. If I have to go through that again, I'd have multiple instances of my site being out there with a dead website address. (Plus, at least my current address includes my pen name.) The reason I switched from Wix to (free) Blogger in the first place was that Wix was so wonky. Slow, slow, slow to modify or add content. Very frustrating to work with. And now I finally have a dedicated email address that matches my site name, so I don't think gravitating to a new host is practical.
If I was an internet wiz I could probably modify my Blogger template; it still wouldn't have any bells and whistles, but it definitely would be less stark. I've "tried on" a few different templates, but didn't like any of them. I browsed a few articles in the past regarding adding a custom template, but everything involves inserting HTML code, and that's just a non-starter for me. Trying to embed anything has been hit or miss. I never know where to paste the code, so I take my best guess. (Thank goodness for the "undo" option.)
The main thing I'd love to get away from is the white background. Think that's easy? Sure, Blogger has some dark themes, but trying them has resulted in my text virtually disappearing, and would require me to go into every line of text I've written and changing the font color. I'm really hesitant to mess with things, because I'd inevitably screw up and not know how to change it back.
I suppose, all in all, my site isn't awful. But it's clearly been designed on the cheap. Or maybe I'm just sick of looking at it. I could cast caution to the wind and try a new outside the box design. Who knows? I might get lucky.
