Am I Misinterpreting Women's Fiction?
I am so confused. I firmly believed that I had a grasp on the concept of women's fiction, which is why I've slotted my books into that genre. (Plus, they don't really fit anywhere else.) Yet everywhere I browse, I'm seeing all manner of fiction dumped into the women's fiction bucket. Is it me or is it them?
Not only that, but the novels I've browsed that truly belong in the genre (at least the way I understand it) are so divergent from my themes. This issue arose again when I submitted my book to Readers' Favorite for a free review. To my credit, gone are the days when I would sign up with a site without researching it first. It appears this place's free service is fine; not particularly advantageous, but if a book manages to earn a four or five-star review, an author can link to it on the Amazon Central page. And any review less than four stars doesn't get posted on the site. The worst criticism I read was that some authors wait a year or more for their review, and some never get one at all. I'm not paying, so as far as I'm concerned, I won't be out anything if that happens to me. The site also sells "services", such as an entry into its "awards", but that seems needless to me. I wouldn't say their awards are highly respected in the industry.
When I took a look at their site from a reader's perspective (something I urge authors to do with any promo site), that's where I found tons of books in the women's fiction category that don't belong there. Aside from the usual romance authors hogging the genre, surprisingly there's a lot of historical fiction included. Every novel with a female protagonist isn't women's fiction! Dumbasses.
Here's the definition of women's fiction from a literary agent:
Women’s fiction is not simply a book whose target audience is women. It’s also a book about a woman’s personal growth and change and it tends to be strongly emotional.
See? It's not me; it's them. And see why I always have to make clear that my books are not romance? It's exhausting.
From the multitude of books listed on this site, I'll consider myself lucky if I get a review in a year or ever, especially given readers' mistaken expectations of my genre. But it's not as if one review (assuming it would be a good review) will do anything for my book anyway.
