LibreOffice Works!
No, LibreOffice isn't perfect, but it did what I needed it to do ~ it allowed me to combine two separate documents into a new file and merge them to form one complete manuscript. Why can't Microsoft Word accomplish that simple task? Is it just bullheadedness? I'm paying you, Microsoft, and you can't even manage one rudimentary process without fucking it up?
The good thing about LibreOffice is that it's pretty intuitive. For someone who's worked with Word for years, I couldn't bear to learn an entirely new program. I don't have the patience for it. But LO (as I'll call it) is very similar to Word. Granted, it has its quirks, but its online help page allowed me to figure out the mundane steps I always took for granted before. Now I'm questioning why I've been paying a yearly fee for the Microsoft subscription.
I likely won't migrate over to LO entirely; force of habit, I suppose; but it's nice to have a Word alternative. I haven't explored its spreadsheet interface yet, but spreadsheets and word processing are my only uses for the Microsoft suite.
One function LO doesn't have (that I know of) is a read aloud feature. Luckily, I already "listened" to a readback of my novel, so that point is moot.
It's a relief to know that all my work wasn't for naught. I now have a complete manuscript that I can upload into KindleCreate, and then it's onward and upward (or downward, as the case may be).
I guess it never hurts to try new things.
