Rediscover the Joy in Writing
I did a quick search on how to rewrite a novel's opening. The articles I found really only told me things I already knew, but it was still good to read the tips as a reinforcement.
One point, however, jumped out at me: Rediscover the joy of writing.
That's it! I've been looking at this rewriting project as a "have to". I have to do it, because if I don't, my novel is doomed. (Yes, it's that bad.)
I loved writing the second half of my story. I was involved, invested in what happens to the main character. The odd scenarios I invented were kind of genius. It was fun.
I need to rediscover the fun. I need to approach it as if I'm writing a brand new story. With that mindset, it's not going to be a slog; it'll be exciting.
What a simple solution! I hate redoing things ~ really, really hate it. It's like when I was recording my own songs. The first take was inevitably the best, no matter if I tried twenty more times. Because as the takes began to add up, I grew bored with it, and it was evident in the way I sang. It was no longer new; no longer fun. My initial burst of enthusiasm evaporated. The process turned into a "have to".
I've been in dire need of an attitude adjustment. Looks like I found it.
