I was disappointed with the results of my last free book promotion (for Bad Blood). No one wanted a copy, so I pulled it a day early. It's one thing to be insulted, but even worse to be humiliated. The story is good, people! I justified my failure by scapegoating the book's blurb, which admittedly needed some clarification. It's only natural for an author to read their blurb and find it quite encompassing. That's because we know the story, so we're reading between the lines. In examining Bad Blood's blurb, I realized that only I knew the antagonist was a psychopath. To potential readers, he came off as just a really mean brother. Oops.
So, I'm trying again, this time with The Diner Girl. Its blurb is pretty benign; it states the main character's problems, there are no crazy people involved, and it hints at the role the diner itself plays in her story. I think the cover is good, too; certainly not serious and foreboding, but kind of light and homespun. By the time I decided to have another go at a free promotion, it was already Friday, so I'm going with today and Sunday. I have no idea whether those are peak book shopping days or not, or if the day of the week even matters. If I again have no takers, I'm likely done. My head is starting to hurt from continually bashing it against the wall.
There are probably a million free books offered on any given day, so maybe I'm being too hard on myself, but I need to know just how big a loser I really am.
