My Weekly Roundup (A Bit Late)
It may feel at times like nothing much is happening in my writing world, but that's because they're small things. They still matter.
One of my new genre-conforming book covers has bothered me for a while. When I first chose it, I thought, well, it's a plate atop a tablecloth ~ that certainly fits with the title, The Diner Girl. But frankly, it irked me. It wasn't attractive. I know that my genre and attractive book covers don't go together (take a look at the best selling women's fiction books), but I still needed a cover that didn't repulse me. So yesterday I scanned Canva's templates again, and I miraculously found a (newly added?) cover that I kind of like. Here's a side-by-side:

The new one still has that thrown-together look of women's fiction, but it's at least semi-attractive. I think it's a huge improvement.
Writing-wise, I had to backtrack, rather than move the story forward. Not only had I composed perhaps the worst scene I've ever written, but I got the moving parts completely wrong. So this time I researched first, then pulled up that scene and rewrote it. It's far better; not perfect, but what is ever perfect? It was clear to me in my initial scene draft that my heart wasn't in it at all. The scene was so lifeless, I should have grabbed a shovel and started digging. I can't remember now if I salvaged even one line from it.
So, a few small things this week, yes, but I'm happy about them. I began the week in a deep funk, but everything is fixable, especially my attitude.
That's a relief.
